Okay, with so much happening around us, it's easy to feel a bit overwhelmed. One thing that's probably on everyone's mind after the recent announcement about monkeypox is how to prevent it from affecting us. Well, this blog will help us understand the basics to stay alert and keep monkeypox at bay.
1) Attention Pet Owners!
Many of us who are reading this must have a soft spot for pets; I know I do! As pet lovers, we are particularly vulnerable to this virus that spreads through animals. Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans, and recent findings indicate that humans are at risk from close contact with infected animals, particularly in areas where the virus is endemic, such as Central and West Africa [2]. The first victims could easily be us if we're not careful. So, my advice to fellow pet parents is to be cautious and not get too close to your furry friends if they show signs of illness. Of course, caring for them is essential, but do so with some precautions in place.
2) Hygiene is Key!
We've been hearing this for almost three years now, but it bears repeating: keep your hygiene practices sharp! Maintaining good hygiene is crucial to combat any lingering or emerging viral threats, including monkeypox. Recent studies highlight the importance of cleanliness in preventing the spread of MPXV, particularly in healthcare settings where the virus has been detected [1]. Make sure to check your sleeping area daily, especially before hitting the sack. Always have hand sanitizer and soap handy. By doing this, we can all contribute to putting an end to this pandemic.
3) Cook Your Food Thoroughly!
When it comes to cooking, make sure you prepare everything thoroughly. For those who enjoy meat, remember that this virus can spread through contaminated food. Recent insights suggest that thorough cooking can significantly reduce the risk of zoonotic transmission, including that of the monkeypox virus [5]. So, take your time to cook meat well enough to eliminate any potential virus. Let's make sure we're safe before we dig in!
4) Safe Sex Practices!
Protection is always necessary for safe sex. With this virus in circulation, ensuring safety is even more critical than ever. Monkeypox can be transmitted through intimate contact, making it essential to stock up on protection to ensure this pox doesn't interfere with your relationships [3]!
5) Should We Wear Masks Again?
This question has been lingering ever since the new pandemic was announced. I understand the frustration, but it's for our own good. Wearing masks for a bit longer can help prevent another wave of this new pandemic. Evidence shows that masks can reduce the transmission of respiratory viruses, and with the emergence of MPXV, taking masking seriously can be an effective measure until we can finally say goodbye to this virus [4]!
If you've not been part of these precautions yet, I urge you to join us. Let's work together to protect ourselves and everyone around us!
